Rathimalar Govindarajoo is a Malaysian dancer, choreographer, performing arts educator and creative collaborator whose career spans more than three decades across Malaysia, the United Kingdom and Australia. Deeply rooted in the Indian classical traditions of Bharatanatyam and Odissi, her artistic practice bridges heritage and contemporary performance through choreography, education and interdisciplinary collaboration.

At the heart of Rathi’s journey is her mother, Sarasvathi Rajan. Following the loss of her father when she was just four years old, Sarasvathi became the unwavering foundation of her daughter’s life and artistic journey. Her love, resilience and countless sacrifices made it possible for Rathi to pursue dance from a young age. Long before international performances, awards or critical acclaim, it was her mother’s belief that nurtured the artist she would become. Today, Rathi continues to acknowledge Sarasvathi as the heart of both her life and her dance.

Rathi began her formative training at Sutra Dance Theatre under Padma Shri Datuk Ramli Ibrahim and has remained closely connected to Sutra for more than three decades. Immersed in Bharatanatyam, Odissi, ballet and contemporary dance, she developed an artistic practice grounded in technical rigour, musicality and a deep respect for tradition.

Through Sutra, Rathi was also given opportunities to deepen her training abroad. She studied Odissi in India with Guru Ileana Citaristi and Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, attended the American Dance Festival at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and undertook Balinese dance training in Ubud with Ni Gusti Ayu Sukmawati of Semara Ratih. These encounters with different teachers, cultures and movement practices became an important part of her development as a dancer and later as a choreographer.

Rathi went on to become a principal dancer with Sutra Dance Theatre, partnering Ramli Ibrahim in Odissi productions for more than a decade. Their performing partnership included productions such as Vision of Forever, in which Rathi performed the central Ardhanariswara duet with him. Her years with Sutra brought extensive performance and touring experience throughout Malaysia and internationally, including performances in India, Indonesia, Japan, Europe and the United States.

In 2001, Rathi relocated to London to join Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, becoming one of the company’s pioneering dancers during an important period of its artistic development. Between 2001 and 2006, she toured extensively throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, performing in productions including Phantasmaton, Transtep, Flicker and Exit No Exit. She later returned to the company to perform in Configurations.

Her years working with Sutra Dance Theatre, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and independent artists transformed her understanding of movement and of how Indian classical dance could retain its integrity while engaging with contemporary choreographic languages. This dialogue between tradition and experimentation continues to underpin her artistic practice today.

Throughout her performing career, Rathi has been recognised for her physical precision, expressive intensity and commanding stage presence. The British Theatre Guide described her as “the small powerhouse Rathimalar Govindarajoo,” while her performances have also been discussed by critics in The Guardian, DanceTabs, The New York Times and other publications.

Returning to Malaysia, Rathi entered another chapter of her career as both performer and educator. Over more than a decade, she developed and led dance and performing arts programmes at institutions including Fairview International School, HELP International School, MAHSA International School and Stella Maris International School. Her educational practice extends beyond technical dance training, using movement and performance to cultivate creativity, confidence, empathy, resilience and cultural understanding.

Committed to dance education and advocacy, Rathi has served as a Dance Education Specialist for CENDANA’s Artis di Sekolah programme, facilitated workshops and masterclasses in Malaysia and internationally, and has been actively involved with MyDance Alliance Malaysia. She has also served as an adjudicator for the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, contributing to the recognition and development of Malaysia’s performing arts community.

Alongside her work as a performer and educator, Rathi has developed an independent choreographic voice. Her works include StarStruck, Rebel Without A Cause?, Quintessence, Panjara, rehab, SYNC, The Crowning Glory, Blue, Rebab, When Spring Came, Exalted, Drowning and REM. Her choreography draws upon her classical training while embracing contemporary movement, collaboration, film, site-responsive performance, improvisation and interdisciplinary practice.

Her work frequently explores the relationship between tradition and contemporary experience, and increasingly considers physical memory, identity, ritual, landscape, emotion and the body as a site of transformation. In recent years, Rathi has also expanded her movement practice through aerial suspension, continuing to investigate how different physical and artistic languages can meet without losing the histories from which they emerge.

Following her marriage to Dev Anand in 2024, Rathi began living and working between Malaysia and Australia. This chapter has opened new possibilities for artistic collaboration and exchange while also deepening her relationship with the cultural and artistic traditions that have shaped her throughout her life.

Rathi’s career has been recognised through a number of honours, including the BOH Cameronian Arts Award for Best Featured Performer in Dance for Samprati, the Women of WATSON Award for Extraordinary Woman in Arts & Play, the Guru Debaprasad Nrutya Prativa Award in Odisha, India, and Marie Claire Malaysia’s Women of Style & Substance Award. She was also a finalist in The Malaysian Women’s Weekly Great Women of Our Time awards.

Today, Rathi continues to perform, choreograph, teach, mentor and collaborate while developing new interdisciplinary work. Guided by curiosity and a lifelong commitment to learning, she continues to explore how Indian classical dance can evolve through contemporary practice, education, collaboration and the changing body.

For Rathi, dance is not simply a profession; it is a lifelong practice of discovery.
