Rathimalar Govindarajoo

Dancer | Choreographer | Teacher | Performing Arts Education Specialist

Rathimalar Govindarajoo is a pioneer in the Performing Arts in Malaysia and abroad, and has 8 years experience in the field of education.

 

Rathi is an accomplished dancer and choreographer with a rich history in the arts, both in Malaysia and internationally. A pioneer dancer with Shobana Jeyasingh Dance (SJDC) from 2001 to 2006 in London, she developed her craft in a vibrant cultural environment. After returning to Malaysia, Rathi dedicated over a decade to nurturing young talent as a Dance Education Specialist at Fairview International School, HELP International School, and MAHSA International School, where she also taught PHSE.

 

A disciple of Dato Ramli Ibrahim, Rathi has been an integral part of the Sutra Foundation Sutra Dance Theatre for over 30 years. She recently concluded her tenure at Stella Maris International School in June 2024 after four fulfilling years, just before marrying Dev Anand in July.

Having relocated to Coffs Harbour, Australia, Rathi is now focused on establishing herself in her new community as a dancer, teacher, and choreographer, eager to inspire and engage with local artists and students.

 

From 2020 to 2024, Rathi served as a judge for the BOH Cameronian Awards in the Dance category, further solidifying her influence in the field. She is also an active member of MyDance Alliance Malaysia and was a Dance Education Specialist in CENDANA’s Artis Di Sekolah program in 2019. Rathi continues to freelance as a teacher, choreographer, dancer, and artistic collaborator both locally and internationally.

 

Performance Highlights: Rathi has performed in prestigious venues and festivals, showcasing her talent at events such as the Downtown Dance Festival in New York and the Tridhara International Odissi Dance Festival. Her dynamic stage presence and innovative choreography have captivated audiences around the globe.

 

Choreographic Works: Among her notable choreographic pieces are “Panjara,” “Rehab,” “Rebab,” and “When Spring Came,” which blend classical and contemporary styles. These works have been praised for their emotional depth and technical precision.

 

Workshops and Masterclasses: Rathi has conducted numerous workshops and masterclasses across Malaysia and internationally, sharing her expertise in various dance forms and inspiring the next generation of dancers.

 

Community Engagement: Committed to promoting the arts, Rathi has initiated outreach programs that introduce dance to underprivileged youth, fostering creativity and self-expression within the community.

 

Media Features: Rathi’s work and contributions to dance have been highlighted in several publications, including interviews in local and international press and television media, as well as features in arts-focused outlets, celebrating her influence in the arts community.

 

Cultural Contributions: As an advocate for cultural exchange, Rathi has participated in numerous cultural festivals, collaborating with artists from diverse backgrounds to promote understanding and appreciation of different art forms.

 

Her artistic achievements have garnered numerous accolades, including the 13th Debaprasad Prativi Award in Orissa, India, the BOH Cameronian Award for Best Feature Performer in the Dance Category, and the Women of WATSON Award for extraordinary women in the Arts & Play in 2013. Additionally, she was recognized as one of the Great Women of Our Time by Malaysian Women’s Weekly Magazine in 2011, alongside the Women of Style & Substance award from Marie Claire Malaysia.
