UNWELCOMED
The much awaited music video by Vix Chandra @iamsayla – UNWELCOMED
Freedom of speech and social equality matters. A calling for a revolution and cultural transformation, even in our habits of ordinary interaction.
Through art we communicate ideas with intent. Never have I worked in something so controversial and fragile – an exploration of artistic activism…. It is important to share, find ways to bridge cultural gaps without contentious attitudes and antagonistic behaviour, get rid of social hierarchy, discrimination, exclusion and oppression! – Rathimalar Govindarajoo

SEPTEMBER 2017
Entranced: An Evening with a Ghost
A haunting weave of dance, installations, visuals, sounds and vocals. This mixed media production brought together – for the first time – two forms that are, on the surface, completely different in approach: the dynamism of contemporary Southeast Asian trance-ritual; and the ancient Japanese Noh drama traditions of restraint and potential. And yet there was also commonalities and cohesions in the two forms. At its centre, Entranced explored the archetypal and metaphorical significance of the ghost as it inhabits the shared worlds of ritual ceremonies and Noh principles that relate to dreams, supernatural worlds, guardian spirits, and the host of heroes and heroines. The result is a hypnotic, eclectic piece of choreography and movement featuring the performer Aida Redza and Noh master Naohiko Umewaka, with the dancers Rathimalar Govindarajoo and Kaede Takaya. Visual mapping by Ammar Khalifa and Toh Kim Khiang, soundscapes by Tadashi Yonago and Syahreez Redza, set installations by Neoh Chai Liang Alvin and lighting by Joie Koo create ghostly sounds and visuals – of entranced love between theliving and the non-living, between mortals and immortals. And everything is overlaid with the drifting poetic raptures of A. Samad Said.

Dance In The Now – Is a variety of Contemporary Solo(s) impromptu(s) Show by various artists – by ‘chance concept’ to live music. This will showcase what it is like creating something on the spot – A Conceptual and Performative Improvisation of Dance and Music.
The idea is to show how a creative process is done in dance choreography – i.e the Merce Cunningham’s technique of choreography by chance – random movements by tossing a coin.
This is a challenging task for each and every dancer/choreographer. Several experienced dancer artists are chosen to explore this idea to experiment and play, to see how this will encourage dancers/choreographers to share and discuss their creative processes with their different and diverse dance experiences and trainings. It is an initiative in coming together, to encourage discussions by sharing and collaborating ideas with concepts in dance and its creative process.
Free entrance for audiences, donation is more than welcome!
Date: 19th & 20th August 2017
Time: 8.30pm
Venue: Now Theatre
If you would like to participate in this dance exploration, please do contact Rathimalar at rathimalar.govindarajoo@gmail.com

Synopsis
Rebab – inspired by the ‘Main Putri’ and the ‘Makyong’.. The concept dwells around the word “Gerhana” as the churning of the ocean where immortality is obtained, and Gods dance where the Moon is eaten by the snake, and a dragon is split to two as Rahu and Kethu…
The creative process included structured improvisational tasks that formed their movements R & D in collaboration with the UMa dancers.
